The Hiking, Cycle-Hiking and Bridleway Network of the Region of Sardinia, and the Walking Routes of the regional register
The RES is the "network" of all the walking (hiking and trekking), cycle-hiking and bridleway routes of Sardinia: over 2,000 kilometres to date, set to approach 3,000 over the next three years (2024-2026, according to the plans of the Regione Sarda).
The digital map of the "trails" – as defined by the Regional Law and regulation – is also overlaid on and interconnected with the "Cammini di Sardegna" established and managed by the Regional Department of Tourism. In the "SardegnaSENTIERI" system (website and app) both information layers can be viewed, each displayed in a different way:
To walk in Sardinia it is therefore essential to use this information tool, with some "premium" features that the Region provides through this app, which from now on we shall call "the official digital map for walking in Sardinia".
The network of trails and itineraries also includes the Sentiero Italia CAI, a national route which on the island starts at Santa Teresa Gallura and ends at Castiadas, at the foot of the Settefratelli massif, in the Sarrabus, a few kilometres from the sea of Cala Sinzias, after crossing the entire eastern backbone of Sardinia and touching all the historical regions and the most fascinating peaks: Limbara, the Buddusò Plateau, Tepilora Park, Montalbo, Tuttavista and the valley of the Cedrino, Supramonte, Gennargentu, Perda Liana, Montarbu Forest and the Tacchi of Ogliastra, and on southwards through the Flumendosa Basin to the heights of Villasalto, Monte Genis, Serpeddì and Baccu Malu...
The RES (Rete Escursionistica della Sardegna) is identified by the waymarking that marks it out, standardised throughout our island with red-white-red waymarking arrows and flags; the RES also enhances the pre-existing major trail routes, the "high routes", the routes of transhumance and the trails of the forestry, rural and agro-pastoral tradition that run, for tens of thousands of kilometres, throughout Sardinia in all four cardinal directions…
SardegnaSentieri is an experimental product for purely informative purposes (published in the form of an online catalogue of the trails of the regional trail network) of the trails registered or in pre-registration in the regional register (the Trail Register, in fact) established by Regional Law 16/2017 and by DGR 48/36 of 02.10.2018 as subsequently amended).
The portal is currently online in its "beta 2" version: this is already shown in the Logo in the portal header, which displays and recalls the concept with the wording "Beta" or "beta version"; the same applies to the app, which is closely linked to the website.
The geographic data displayed on Sardegna Sentieri are the result of specialist work by the staff of the regional agency FoReSTAS and CAI Sardegna, together with partner bodies (Municipalities, Provinces, GAL, Parks and Nature Reserves) or external suppliers, as indicated in the detailed route sheets. They may nonetheless contain inaccuracies and defects in format and accuracy, to which the warnings in the introduction and what follows apply. Some content comes from the world of Open Source and Open Data, from Web 2.0 (the Social or Collaborative Internet) under CC-type licences: the approach is therefore to return the content to the same environment in the same way (so-called Copyleft under a Creative Commons SA-NC-BY licence) and progressively to indicate which content is not explicitly covered by this form of distribution; images, however, may be protected by copyright when they are not expressly released under an explicit CC-SA-NC-BY licence.
What is meant by a trail? It is well described in the Wikipedia entry of the same name, as well as in the REGIONAL TRAIL REGULATION deriving from Regional Law no. 16/2017, which established the RES (the Hiking and Cycle-Hiking Network of Sardinia) and the RIS (the Bridleway Network of Sardinia)... in short, the trail network of Sardinia. How the Sentiero Italia Digital Map APP works and how to use it
The app for Android and iOS systems contains (and allows you to view and/or download) all the digital mapping of the RES, to take with you at all times. This Digital Mapping dedicated to walking in Sardinia, with more than 2,000 kilometres of routes and constantly growing and expanding, is the result of the partnership with the Club Alpino Italiano and with the best professionals of Forestas and of the national hiking world.
All the RES trails are included in the "REGIONAL TRAIL REGISTER" established by Sardinian law, and closely integrated with the national register of the REI (the Italian hiking network) managed by CAI in Italy.
We have designed a new map with a dedicated design to make it available to everyone, Sardinians and non-Sardinians alike, to all those who want to get to know the island on foot; the app is built from open cartographic data:
• Nature and landforms in high resolution
• the trails of the RES regional register (shown on the map in RED) and the walking routes of the regional Register (shown on the map in GREEN)
• Georeferenced maps in image format, compatible with navigation apps, contour lines, and a series of basemaps and layers produced by the regional agency Forestas and by the Region.
In three sections:
• Homepage: trails divided by historical-geographical region of Sardinia (e.g. Sarrabus, Gallura, Planargia, Barbagia di Ollolai...) for quick searching; search by stage code, place name, starting point and end point, trail code, route name...
• General map: view of all the stages across Sardinia, also through data that can be filtered by "historical region" or "Sardinian hiking register area" or "NO HUNTING areas" or "forest areas" or "mountain areas"...
• Profile (personal area, with data that remain on the device): this is a space with some general content (disclaimer, instructions, privacy and contact details) where the maps of the trails selected on the map for download are saved "locally", making them accessible offline too. The downloaded tracks are therefore available offline (with maps, descriptions, images) and there is a "Settings" ("impostazioni") area (gear-wheel button) where you can set the language of use (Italian or English).
Note: complete the download while exploring the interactive map with an internet connection; after that, the downloaded tracks will be available when the device has no connection: after a few seconds the app automatically switches to ”offline” mode and makes all and only the downloaded tracks available on the interactive map. The same downloaded tracks available offline are listed in the “Profile” (“profilo”) section.
SINGLE STAGE FEATURES
• View of the detailed map of the trail or walking route/itinerary
• View of the technical details of the trail or walking route/itinerary, with description and photos and including points of interest (POI)
• Download of map and interactive data for offline use
• Navigation along the stage track, offline too (requires the use of location on the mobile device, without it being passed on to external servers; see in any case the privacy notice)
• Sharing of the stage on social media
• Saving of your favourite track(s) on your own device, with an anonymous account (see in any case the overall privacy notice).
Geolocation
This APP is particularly useful in the field with geolocation enabled, which – in the map interfaces – shows a blue dot representing the current position of the device in use. NB: your position IS NOT TRANSMITTED TO ANY SERVER, BUT IS ONLY PROCESSED LOCALLY.
Premium features of the Mobile APP
All the features of the Mobile APP are free for everyone, paid for by the R.A.S. through the regional agency Forestas.
How we build the map
The official digital map of the Sardinian Trail network is produced with a dedicated cartographic style, specially designed for hiking.
The map aims to describe the physical and natural features of the territory with high fidelity. This is possible by reprocessing open cartographic data produced by public administrations: the digital terrain model and land-use data.
The high-resolution digital model (DTM) makes it possible to create hill shading (the shadows of the slopes) and contour lines in great detail. Hikers can thus read the morphology of the land at a glance, which is very important for orientation.
Various background colours are used on the map, indicating the presence and type of vegetation (woods, pastures, crops, vineyards and orchards, uncultivated areas, etc.) and in general the nature and use of the land.
This information is also very useful for good orientation.
Above the "natural" layer, the map shows the man-made features, consisting essentially of buildings and the transport network, as well as a rich toponymy. On this subject, you can read an interesting in-depth article on the SardegnaSENTIERI website.
The transport network ranges from main roads to minor paths. This geographic information is sourced and constantly updated from the OpenStreetMap database.
Data from OpenStreetMap can be freely used by anyone to build maps or other derived products, the only requirement being to cite the source.
• for support regarding the digital map or the APP, contact info@webmapp.it or tavolo.tecnico.res@forestas.it
• to report issues on the trails, use the SARDEGNASENTIERI REPORT online form or write to segnalazioni@sardegnasentieri.it or (for the Sentiero Italia CAI) segnalazionisicai@cai.it
• to report issues on the walking routes, use the contacts of the managing body (e.g. Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara) or contact the Regional Department of Tourism, Crafts and Trade
The information displayed on this app is synchronised daily with the website of the regional trail register maintained by Forestas and the Club Alpino Italiano (Sardinian regional group) on behalf of the Region, according to the rules deriving from the Consolidated Tourism Act (Regional Law 16/2017: see all the references on the Forestas website).
Data and information relating to the system of the Cammini di Sardegna entered in the regional register managed by the Department of Tourism come from that register and/or directly from the bodies (private and public-private) that manage these itineraries, and directly from the related websites, where registered by the Regional Department of Tourism, Crafts and Trade.
ON THE INFORMATION PUBLISHED ON THE WEBSITE
The trails are displayed purely to demonstrate the potential of the regional trail network, and neither their passability nor their safety can be guaranteed in absolute terms merely because they are shown on the interactive map.
Furthermore, some of the trails involve particular difficulties and are best walked with specialist guides or experienced leaders, without prejudice to the above. The regional agency FoReSTAS declines all liability for any damage to persons or property arising from the use of a trail shown on the website or on this app: therefore, anyone walking a trail must organise the excursion without relying exclusively on the information presented on these pages.
In this regard, please consult the specific LEGAL NOTICES page.

All the information on the hiking routes described is verified through repeated site inspections, also with the collaboration of CAI Sardegna members and the Alpine Rescue service (CNSASS)..
We constantly maintain the content and give the utmost consideration to reports. However, there may be some inaccuracies due to clerical errors or to sudden changes in the environment affecting the passability of one or more parts of the trail or of entire stages (such as landslides or other weather events, fallen trees, closures or interruptions of passage, or tampering with the waymarking) not yet recorded in the database.
You can help us by reporting them through the dedicated "reports" form available on the SardegnaSENTIERI home page
All excursion times, descriptions and assessments of the routes are indicative and must never replace each user's experience and ability to assess conditions. In the new SardegnaSENTIERI system a calculation algorithm has been introduced, based on parameters verified at national level, which uses the track and the information deriving from the plano-altimetric graph calculated from the digital terrain model (DTM) with a resolution of around 10 m. This may produce results that are not always consistent, but only indicative. In the trail sheet, however, more specific information is provided (for example, how the gradient makes outward and return walking times significantly different.
The time needed to walk a trail in fact depends on a series of factors, both objective and subjective:
OBJECTIVE FACTORS: gradient (and therefore the direction in which the route is walked) - season and weather (e.g. headwind) - ground conditions (e.g. muddy after rain) - air humidity…
SUBJECTIVE FACTORS: hiking experience - physical fitness - tolerance of the type of climate - emotional state - state of health…
In any case, all liability is declined for damage or accidents arising from incorrect information, misinterpretation or any other event.
